The Foundation of the City Palace Museum was laid in 1559. It is an enormous complex, standing on a low ridge overlooking Lake Pichola, in Rajasthan, on the west, a tribute to the constructive genius and architectural taste of the Maharanas of Mewar. The City Palace Museum, Udaipur was set up in 1969 by the Maharana Bhagwat Singh to safeguard and preserve the cultural heritage and the time honoured traditions of the people of Mewar. Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF) is presently the custodian of the City Palace Complex. The entire Museum Complex is under renovation with New galleries being added to the Museum by the Ministry of Culture Grant, Conservation Project, such as the Silver Gallery, Photography Gallery, Sculpture Gallery and Music Gallery. Work is in progress to add an Architecture Gallery and a Gallery depicting the life in Zanana.
